George Stubbs
George Stubbs lived between 1724 - 1806. George Stubbs was better known for his excellent portrayals of horses, also painted dogs. Among George Stubbs ' many studies was the study of Fino, a black and white Spitz which was owned by the then Prince of Wales who later became George IV Philip Reingale (1749 - 1833). George IV Philip Reingale became involved with dogs with his introduction to the painting of sporting subjects, several of which are well known and include Setters, Greyhounds and Italian Greyhounds.
Perhaps surprisingly it was Reingale who was responsible for the 24 studies of dog breeds commissioned for inclusion in the book The Sportsman 's Cabinet published in 1803.
